Barter Books in Alnwick – housed in the town’s magnificent old Victorian railway station – is Europe’s largest second-hand bookstore and home to the famous ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ poster.
Named by the New Statesmen magazine as ‘The British Library of second-hand bookshops’, bookworms of all ages can spend hours rifling through its packed bookshelves while a train circles the model railway tracks overhead.
