There’s something magical about North Yorkshire in winter. Crisp air, frosty fields, and the kind of stillness that makes a warm inn feel even cosier. For our third instalment of ‘Postcards from The Inns’, we’re sharing a story from Steve and Anna, returning guests who chose The King’s Head Inn for a snowy adventure and a long-awaited stage of the Cleveland Way.

A Winter Break, Perfectly Timed

We’ve stayed with The Inn Collection Group a couple of times before, so when we spotted the Winter Break offer at The King’s Head Inn, it felt like the perfect excuse for another visit and the ideal base for walking the next stage of the Cleveland Way. We arrived the night before our walk and were greeted straight away by friendly and helpful staff. The bar was warm, bright, and buzzing with that early-Christmas feeling. The team had been busy putting up the decorations, which made it feel so festive and welcoming. Our room, in the separate block next to the pub, was warm, clean, and really comfortable, just what we needed before a winter day on the hills.

A Perfect Winter’s Day Walk

Over the past few months, we’ve been tackling the Cleveland Way in short sections, and this time we were ready for the Roseberry Topping to Guisborough stretch. After a fantastic breakfast at the inn (honestly, it kept us going for hours), we wrapped up, laced our boots, and set off into what turned out to be a very snowy North Yorkshire morning. Even with the snow, the views from the summit of Roseberry Topping were truly spectacular, the kind that stop you in your tracks. From there, we followed the trail across to Guisborough, enjoying the winter scenery and that quiet sense of adventure that only comes with walking in the colder months. Once we reached Guisborough, we hopped on the local bus back and, perfectly timed, it dropped us right outside the pub where we’d left our car. You really can’t ask for more on a winter walk.

Cosy Food, Friendly Faces

Our Winter Break included dinner for two, and after a day out in the cold, the King’s Head Inn's warm bar area could not have been more inviting. We enjoyed choosing from the pub menu, and we have to give a special mention to the cheese and onion potato skins, superb! The pub has a lovely atmosphere, a great location, and loads of off-road parking. It’s easy to see why we would recommend it.
