Coast or countryside: where to base yourself in Northumberland

One of the best things about Northumberland is the variety of landscapes waiting to be explored. Whether you’re dreaming of salty sea air, endless sandy beaches and coastal paths, or peaceful countryside walks through rolling hills and historic villages, our five dog-friendly inns put you in the perfect place to start every adventure.

The Northumberland Coast

From Seahouses, Bamburgh, Amble, Blyth and Beal, you’ll be perfectly placed to experience the stunning Northumberland coast. Enjoy easy access to miles of dog-friendly coastline. Let your pup run free on the wide, off-lead beaches at Bamburgh, Alnmouth and Druridge Bay, where there are no seasonal restrictions, or stretch your legs along the scenic Northumberland Coast Path.

Looking for something a little different? Dogs are welcome on many Farne Islands sightseeing sailings, making it easy to soak up the spectacular coastal scenery together. If you’re visiting Holy Island from Beal, be sure to check the causeway tide times before setting off. However you choose to explore, the Northumberland coast is packed with unforgettable experiences for you and your dog.

Northumberland Countryside

While many of our inns are perfectly positioned along the coast, it’s well worth heading inland for a day of exploring. The Hog’s Head Inn in Alnwick is the ideal base for discovering market town charm, with Alnwick Castle, Alnwick Garden’s popular Dog Days events and plenty of dog-friendly cafés and shops nearby.

Venture further into Hadrian’s Wall country to explore one of Britain’s most iconic landscapes, wander the walking trails of the Cheviot Hills, or spend the day in Kielder Forest and England’s largest Dark Sky Park. While pet dogs aren’t permitted inside Kielder Observatory, they’re welcome to join you on the beautiful Lakeside Way, making it a fantastic destination for scenic walks before settling in to admire Northumberland’s famous dark skies.

Wherever you choose to stay, you’ll find cosy accommodation, a warm welcome for wagging tails, and plenty of dog-friendly walks, attractions and pubs just waiting to be discovered.

Walks from the door of every inn

Whether you’re after a gentle seaside stroll or a full day of exploring, our dog-friendly inns are perfectly placed for some of Northumberland’s best walks. From sweeping beaches and historic castles to woodland trails and iconic landmarks, there’s an adventure waiting for every pair of walking boots – and every set of paws.

Bamburgh Beach to Seahouses

Closest inn: The Bamburgh Castle Inn

Step straight onto one of Northumberland’s most iconic coastal walks. This 3-mile one-way route follows the shoreline between Bamburgh and Seahouses, with uninterrupted sea views and plenty of space for dogs to run off lead all year round. It’s the perfect walk before returning to the inn for a well-earned rest.

Craster to Dunstanburgh Castle

Closest inns: The Bamburgh Castle Inn or The Hog’s Head Inn

This 2.6-mile return walk combines dramatic coastal scenery with the impressive ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle. Dogs are welcome but should remain on a lead around the English Heritage site and livestock. Don’t forget to stop in Craster for fresh seafood before heading back.

Alnmouth Beach

Closest inn: The Hog’s Head Inn

Just a short drive from Alnwick, this 2-mile linear beach walk is ideal for dogs that love the sand and sea. With no seasonal restrictions, Alnmouth Beach offers plenty of space to stretch four legs while owners enjoy sweeping coastal views and the charming village nearby.

Druridge Bay

Closest inn: The Amble Inn

With seven miles of golden sand and no seasonal dog restrictions, Druridge Bay is made for long, carefree walks. Whether you’re enjoying an early morning wander or watching the sunset over the North Sea, there’s plenty of room for your dog to explore off lead.

Hadrian’s Wall: Steel Rigg to Sycamore Gap

Closest inn: The Hog’s Head Inn or day trip from any of our Northumberland inns

One of England’s most famous walks, this 3-mile route takes in spectacular views along Hadrian’s Wall. Because of grazing sheep, dogs should remain on a lead throughout the walk, following the National Trust’s Canine Code. It’s a rewarding day trip packed with history and unforgettable scenery.

Kielder Lakeside Way

Closest inn: The Hog’s Head Inn or day trip from any of our Northumberland inns

The full Lakeside Way is a 26-mile circular route, but shorter 1-3 mile sections make it ideal for a relaxed day out with your dog. Wander peaceful forest trails, enjoy waterside views and experience the tranquillity of Kielder Forest before staying to admire Northumberland’s famous dark skies.

Holy Island Circular

Closest inn: The Lindisfarne Inn

Just minutes from Beal, this 5.5-mile circular walk explores the unique landscapes of Holy Island. Dogs should be kept on a lead to protect wildlife and grazing animals, and it’s essential to check the causeway tide times before travelling to and from the island.

Hareshaw Linn Waterfall

Closest inn: The Hog’s Head Inn or day trip from any of our Northumberland inns

Hidden in woodland near Bellingham, this beautiful 3-mile walk follows a riverside trail to the spectacular Hareshaw Linn waterfall. It’s a peaceful route with plenty of shady woodland, bridges and streams, making it a favourite for adventurous dogs and their owners.

Know before you go:

Many of Northumberland’s beaches welcome dogs all year round, including Bamburgh Beach, Alnmouth Beach and Druridge Bay. Seasonal restrictions do apply in a few locations, including the Long Nanny area at Beadnell Bay (May-July) to protect nesting birds and parts of Newbiggin Beach (May-September), so it’s always worth checking local signage before setting off.
