- Paws off the furniture, please. Dogs should stay off the soft furnishings.

- You're responsible for your dog and if any damage is caused during your stay.

    If it's your first visit to the Lake District with your dog, we'd recommend staying close to Lake Windermere. It's one of the region's most iconic destinations, with scenic lakeside walks, dog-friendly attractions, welcoming pubs and plenty of opportunities to explore together. We would recommend The Wateredge Inn - located right on the shores of Lake Windermere with a large beer garden for panoramic views and plenty of room to stretch those paws! The Wateredge Inn also offers garden rooms, perfect for pets who want their own space to relax in the fresh air after a long day of exploring.

  • What should I bring for my dog's stay?

    To help your dog feel right at home, we recommend packing their lead, favourite bed or blanket, toys, food (if you prefer to bring your own), and any medication they may need during your stay. With a few of their favourite things packed, your four-legged friend will have everything they need to feel comfortable, relaxed and right at home at our dog-friendly inns.

  • Are dogs allowed in our restaurants and bars?

    All of our pubs welcome dogs in designated dining and bar areas. Some of our inns have parts of the dining area which they keep pet-free, but if you're pre-booking or walking in, just let our staff know you have a dog and they will be more than happy to find you a table to accommodate you all!

  • Are dogs allowed on Lake Windermere cruises?

    Yes! Well-behaved dogs are welcome aboard Windermere Lake Cruises, making it a great way to experience the beauty of England's largest lake together. With stunning views, dog-friendly jetties and plenty of lakeside walks to enjoy before or after your cruise, it's the perfect addition to a dog-friendly break in the Lake District.

  • Do you have any rules for dogs staying with you?

    We simply ask that dogs are kept under control, cleaned up after, remain on a lead where appropriate, and are respectful of other guests so everyone can enjoy their visit. For your dog's safety and comfort, we kindly ask that they aren't left alone in your bedroom during your stay.

Distance: 1–2 miles (longer routes available)
Terrain: Well-maintained woodland paths with some steps and uneven ground.
Best for: Puppies, older dogs and families looking for a shorter adventure.
Lead or off lead? Keep dogs on a lead around the waterfalls, bridges and busier sections of the trail.
Closest inn: The Ullswater Inn

Aira Force is one of the Lake District’s most iconic waterfalls, winding through ancient woodland before tumbling into a dramatic gorge. It’s a beautiful walk in every season and perfect if you’re after stunning scenery without a full day’s hike.

Safety tip: Paths and steps can become slippery after heavy rain, so take extra care around the waterfall.

Tarn Hows

Distance: Around 2 miles circular
Terrain: Wide, well-surfaced paths with gentle gradients.
Best for: Older dogs, younger pups and relaxed family walks.
Lead or off lead? Dogs can enjoy some off-lead time where appropriate, but keep them on a lead around grazing livestock.

Loughrigg Fell

Distance: Around 4 miles circular
Terrain: Well-marked paths with gentle climbs, rocky sections and open fell.

Lead or off lead? Dogs can enjoy off-lead sections where appropriate, but should be kept under close control near grazing sheep and other livestock.

Old Man of Coniston

Terrain: Rocky fell paths with steep ascents and uneven ground.

Dodd Wood and Dodd Summit

Distance: Around 4.5 miles circular
Terrain: Woodland trails, forest tracks and a steady uphill climb to the summit.
Best for: Dogs with moderate fitness who enjoy a mix of woodland and fell walking.
Lead or off lead? Dogs can enjoy stretches off lead where safe, but should be kept on a lead around livestock, wildlife and busier sections of the trail.

Just a short drive from Bassenthwaite, Dodd Wood offers one of the Lake District’s most rewarding woodland walks. Wander through peaceful forest trails before climbing to Dodd Summit, where you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views across Bassenthwaite Lake, Derwentwater and the northern fells. Keep your eyes peeled along the way – you may even spot ospreys soaring overhead during the nesting season.

Whether you’re after a gentle stroll beneath the trees or a more energetic climb to the top, Dodd Wood is a fantastic choice for dogs and their owners alike.

Safety tip: Be aware of cyclists and forestry vehicles on shared tracks, and keep your dog close if you encounter wildlife or nesting birds.

Dog-Safe Lake Swimming

Many dogs love cooling off in the Lake District’s lakes and tarns, especially during warmer weather. Always choose calm, accessible spots and check the water before letting your dog swim. Avoid areas with strong currents, boat traffic or steep banks.

It’s also worth watching out for blue-green algae, which can sometimes appear during warmer months and is highly toxic to dogs. If you notice green scum or warning signs around the water, keep your dog well away and choose another spot for a paddle.

Before setting off, it’s a good idea to read the Lake District National Park’s guidance on rules for dogs in the National Park, including advice on livestock, wildlife and responsible walking with your dog.
