Tasty treats come to North Tyneside as Cones and Oswin’s open

North Tyneside’s newest Fish and Chip takeaway and ice cream parlour threw open their doors on Monday lunchtime, as The Inn Collection Group launched Oswin’s and Cones at The Tynemouth Castle Inn.

Part of the multi-million-pound renovation project that saw the pub and bedrooms launch with a bang at the start of November, the new offerings are positioning themselves as the place to enjoy traditional seaside treats whilst enjoying the stunning beauty of Longsands Beach.

Named after the ancient King of Northumbria, Oswin’s is aiming to become the fish and chip shop of choice by offering the very best of sustainably sourced fish shop favourites, all cooked in either beef dripping or sunflower oil to allow the shop to cater for all tastes.

Staples like cod and haddock, landed in North Shields and traceable back to the boat that made the catch are all present and coated in a golden crispy batter, that the team have spent weeks perfecting in the build-up to opening.

Favourites not from the sea are also on offer with the ever-reliable battered sausage, haggis and Smokey also on the menu.

There are also some extra special treats as Oswin’s aims to set itself apart from the competition, with Oswin’s Crispy Mix providing a delightful medley of cod, king prawns and squid, whilst monkfish scampi offers an elevated and luxurious take of bite-sized goodness to indulge in.

It is not just the main events where Oswin’s is offering something unique but also the essential condiments, with the secret recipe Oswin’s Sauce offering a tangy, tastebud-tantalising accompaniment that sits wonderfully alongside homemade tartare sauce, curry and gravy.

Found next door, Cones is a wonderful ice cream parlour that fits in superbly with the art-deco feel of The Tynemouth Castle Inn, with a traditional look and ambience that is instantly recognisable.

Offering more than 20 flavours of gelato that are made fresh on the premises, Cones is a paradise for those who prefer a seaside treat to be cool and sweet.

Alongside its dazzling array of flavours to choose from, dispensers that offer customers the opportunity to add unlimited toppings mean that each serve is set to be unique to the person ordering.

Amongst delights such as Raspberry Ripple, Mint Chocolate and Espresso Martini there are unique gems including Unicorn, Cheeky Monkey and Nutella.

That chocolatey and nutty delight is a further fillip in the new parlour’s cap, which is the only version in the north east made using a recipe endorsed by maker Ferrero, giving the unmistakable taste and smell of the world-famous spread.

Served either in tubs or, as tradition demands atop a wafer or waffle cone, a single scoop of deliciousness is priced at £3.25, with other serving sizes available.

Building on the traditions established by parlours the world over, Cones is also ready to serve a delicious range of hot drinks and affogatos, with seating available outside to take a moment to savour and enjoy.

Cones is open 10am – 6pm and Oswin’s is open 12 – 8pm seven days a week.
