What is Kynren?

Kynren is an award-winning live outdoor theatre spectacular held in Bishop Auckland, County Durham. Unlike a traditional stage show, Kynren takes audiences on an unforgettable journey through 2,000 years of British history, combining dramatic storytelling and the help of over 1,000 volunteers to bring history to life, with stunning special effects and choreographed routines. 

Since launching in 2016, Kynren has grown to become one of County Durham's most popular attractions. For the 2026 season, it enters an exciting new chapter with the launch of Kynren – The Storied Lands, the UK's first live-action show park.

Whether you’re planning a family day out or an unforgettable evening in County Durham, Kynren now offers two incredible experiences to choose from: the traditional 90-minute evening show, or new for 2026, the ‘Day Park’ has been introduced, allowing you to choose one of four historical times to become immersed in.

Kynren: Day Park

If you’re visiting during the day, Kynren – The Storied Lands is a brand-new immersive attraction for 2026 that brings history, myths and legends to life through a series of live shows and interactive experiences. There are four options of route to take: Roman, Viking, Knight or Victorian – which immerse you in the different historical time frames.

You can take your time to wander through themed historical settings, enjoy spectacular live performances, watch skilled horse riders and birds of prey in action, and discover stories inspired by Britain’s rich heritage. There are also places to eat and drink throughout the site, making it easy to spend a full day exploring everything on offer.

Kynren: Night Show

As the sun sets, Kynren transforms into one of the UK’s most spectacular live outdoor shows. Kynren: An Epic Tale of England is a 90-minute performance that takes audiences on an unforgettable journey through 2,000 years of British history. From Roman Britain and Viking invasions to castles, kings and queens, expect breathtaking special effects, live animals, impressive stunts, and a talented cast all performing on the outdoor stage, seating 8,000 per show. The ticket for the evening show also includes pre-show entertainment, where you can arrives 2.5 hours before the show starts to discover the Viking Village and food options on offer.

What dates does Kynren take place?

Kynren is a seasonal attraction, taking place each summer. For the 2026 season, Kynren runs from 18th July - 12th September 2026. With the new Day Park introduced for 2026, the opening times vary to the evening performance.

Where is Kynren located?

Kynren takes place in Bishop Auckland, a market town in the heart of County Durham. The spectacular outdoor venue is set within the grounds of Flatts Farm, just a short distance from Bishop Auckland town centre, making it easy to reach whether you’re travelling by car or public transport.

Thanks to its central location, Kynren is an excellent addition to a weekend break in County Durham. It’s just a 30-minute drive from Durham City, around 45 minutes from Newcastle, and approximately one hour from York, making it a popular attraction for both locals and visitors exploring the region.

Does Kynren run in the rain?

Yes! As an outdoor attraction, Kynren is designed to go ahead in most weather conditions, including rain. The performance takes place in the open air theatre, so it’s a good idea to check the forecast before your visit and dress appropriately. Waterproof clothing and sensible footwear are recommended, while umbrellas may not be the best option to take, as can be restricted during the performance to avoid obstructing other guests’ views.
