Kayak on Coniston Water

Coniston Water is a real draw for visitors to Coniston. The combination of the sparkling blue waters surrounded by lush greenery and sweeping mountains and fells all make it a true beauty spot. The views alone make the trip worthwhile, however, we’d recommend making the most of the fun to be had on the water!

Why not rent a kayak and spend a day making some memories on the lake? Kayaks and safety gear are simple and affordable to rent from local providers

Walk to the Coniston Copper mines

Explore the remains of the area’s industrial history at Coniston’s copper mines. The site still stands up in the foothills where mining took place for over 400 years before closing down for good. The huge watermill that would have been used for powering the machinery still stands and makes a huge visual impression. The walk itself is also beautiful, revealing breathtaking views the higher you climb.

Visit the Ruskin Museum

The Ruskin Museum is another fabulous way to spend your time at your accommodation in Coniston, especially for history buffs. It shines a light on the fascinating history of the area including the famous water speed record attempt of Donald Campbell. You can even see the iconic Bluebird K7 hydroplane in the Bluebird Wing of the museum!

Want to know more about John Ruskin? You can also visit his former home, Brantwood, which is now a centre for the arts on the shores of Coniston Water.

Enjoy the local area

Coniston itself has plenty of lovely local amenities to explore, in particular the rustic pubs, bakery and cafes. Take a stroll around and enjoy the friendly local independent shops and eateries.

Want to explore more of the Lakes? There’s plenty to see and do. Explore some of the UK’s prettiest walking paths including Langdale Valley, Hawkshead, Esthwaite Water or Grizedale Forest as a start. Plan a stop by the lively twin towns of Windermere and Bowness, known for their charm.
